Mirror Symmetry Collages in Folded Paper
The paper will explain a folding technique using 2-, 4- and 8-fold mirror symmetry, not using one sheet, but
using multiple sheets of folded paper, arranged as a collage. It will show how this manifestation of mirror
symmetry can be used to create the illusion of squares or rectangles that appear to overlap and dissolve, often in
visually pleasing and unfathomable ways. The results are atypical of geometric origami, creating a visual
language that is perhaps closer to fine art than to the decorative arts, with which origami tessellations and
corrugations are often associated.
