Perhaps the Plaintive Numbers Flow

“Numbers” was a synonym for poetry for many centuries, and the word “rhyme” goes back to an ancient stem meaning “to count”. So what are poets counting? Is there anything consistent that could cross cultures and languages? The syllable is a candidate, but it’s a slippery unit. Recently, neuroscientists have been exploring the firing of a particular group of neurons that might be giving poets something to count on their fingers.
