Exploring Symmetry Using Aestheometry in Classrooms and Beyond
Stephen Erfle and Katherine Erfle

This workshop explores Aestheometry—the art of creating patterns and curved images using straight lines—in an electronic format. The 4ColorAestheometry Excel file mimics string art on a closed set of vertices. The file is used to guide participants through the creation of elaborate patterns, shapes, and designs, discussing various geometric notions involving symmetry along the way. The file allows for open exploration of a variety of geometric and numeric topics and can be used by students of a wide variety of mathematics levels and Excel-proficiency.

By changing three parameters-- Vertices, V; Subdivisions, S; and Points, P—participants are able to explore and create intricate digital artwork and simultaneously uncover applicable concepts from graphing, symmetry, and numeric pattern recognition. Many sheets provide the underlying vertices, but the Four Color sheet allows users to create their own images using vertices of their choosing. The electronic format allows for ready exploration and adjustment of the underlying parameters and is easy to use, both inside the classroom and beyond.
